CMU Lego Club Builds Connection

Central Michigan University's Lego Club is giving students a simple way to relax, have fun and take a break from busy college life.

The club, founded by president Sophia Laurain, began as an idea in a classroom and quickly grew into a recognized student organization. Its long-term goal is to work with middle and high school students with special needs, using Lego building to support motor skill development. While still in its early stages, the club currently focuses on raising funds and providing a welcoming environment where students can build with donated or personal sets.

For members like sophomore Jaiden Randolph, the club offers a break from demands of college life. Meetings, held weekly, give students time to relax and focus on something simple and enjoyable. Randolph said the environment is both fun and stress-relieving, with students building, talking and spending time together.

The club has grown rapidly, reaching hundreds of registered members and continues to attract students from wide range of majors. Laurain said the organization is open to anyone, even those who do actively build.

At its core, the Lego Club shows how a simple activity can bring people together and create meaningful experiences.

Experience

For my final video I had a hard time coming up with an idea. I knew I wanted to do an RSO. I thought I saved the easiest for last by keeping my feature story until the end, but it in fact did not end up in my favor as it is the end of the year and all of the RSO's are having end of year parties and whatnot. But then I found Lego Club on Engage Central.

I reached out to the president really late at night and she actually emailed me, told me they wouldn't be having a meeting that week but was welcome to attend the last meeting, but told me that they didn't expect many people to show up.

I got there and there were quite a few people who showed up. It was actually quite cool, did the interviews during the meeting and then shot some b-roll in between and after doing the interviews. I thought it would be cool to interview one of the members of the club as well as the president to kind of get both perspectives even though it was the same, cause what bad is there to say about legos lol.

Overall, I think my video turned out pretty well, I do wish more people showed up just so I could get more people building things, but they did only also have two lego sets that they had bought prior to the meeting. So everyone else was just free building or building a set that they brought in.

I am honestly thinking about joining the club, as I thought it was really cool and the group of people was so nice, welcoming and funny. I don't have classes on Friday's so the weekends I spend on campus, you may be able to find me at Lego Club at 4pm in Anspach 153.
